Abstract

Consumption potential reflects an upper limit for transactions that can occur in a given location, when all units that sell and buy a category of good or service are considered. Thus, studies focused on the size of the consumer market are important, especially to identify the spending profile of individuals from different regions and socioeconomic classes. Given the above, the objective of this article is to quantify the consumption potential, for 2019, of the municipalities that comprise the micro region of Jaú / SP. This is a quantitative survey where the data were extracted from governmental institutes and the Consumer Potential Index (IPC Maps). For the definition of income classes, the Brazil Economic Classification Criterion was adopted. The results indicated that the micro-region has more than 389 thousand inhabitants, 96.6% live in an urban area and 60% are economically active (between 15 and 60 years old). The consumption potential was estimated at R $ 9.6 billion (2019), with 66.9% concentrated in the cities of Jaú (39.3%), Pederneiras (11.6%), Barra Bonita and Igaraçu do Tietê (16%). The largest portion of the population's consumption was with housing (27.48%), followed by expenses with beauty, employees, services (17.22%). Class B was responsible for the largest volume of spending on products and services with 44.1% of the total. Class C produced an expense of more than R $ 3.4 billion, which represented 35.2% of the total.
